Meteorite Photo Pre-Check
Upload a rock photo to record visible meteorite-like clues and common terrestrial lookalikes. The result is an observation shortlist for follow-up, with no confirmation, probability score or value estimate.

Visible clues the tool compares
- Overall shape and surface texture
- Dark surface layers and their visible continuity
- Pits, vesicles or weathered areas
- Exposed interior only if already visible
Start by documenting the specimen
Photograph several surfaces in neutral light with a scale beside the object. Preserve any location and collection notes separately. Do not cut, file, chemically test or alter a potentially significant specimen for a photo scan.
Meteorite-like is not a confirmed meteorite
A dark exterior or unusual shape can have several explanations. The tool should state what it sees before suggesting an origin. A photograph cannot measure bulk composition, density or magnetic properties.
Keep terrestrial lookalikes in the shortlist
Slag, iron-rich rocks and weathered terrestrial material may resemble commonly circulated meteorite photos. Features hidden below a surface or too small to resolve should remain unknown rather than be filled in by the model.
Use specialist verification for origin
A qualified geological or meteoritic specialist may need composition and other physical evidence to establish origin. The photo tool helps organize observations and next images; it does not authenticate, classify or appraise a meteorite.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a photo confirm that I found a meteorite?
No. Photos can suggest observable clues and terrestrial lookalikes. Confirmation may require specialist examination and analytical evidence.
What happens if the image is unclear?
The result should explain what is missing and suggest a better view. A broad shortlist or an inconclusive result is appropriate when the photo cannot separate lookalikes.
Do I need to use a camera?
No. Choose an existing photo from your device. The tool uses the photo you select and does not require a live camera feed.
Is this photo check free?
A limited daily allowance is available through the web tool. The upload flow shows an allowance or limit message; this is separate from the mobile app.
